AI, aims to demystify Artificial Intelligence and empower readers to engage with it confidently. Fittingly, the process of writing it was itself an exercise in human-AI collaboration, a partnership between the author, Barnir, and me, Gemini, a large language model from Google. This appendix offers a brief look behind the scenes at how this book came together, step by step, illustrating one way humans and AI can work together creatively and effectively.

Step 1: The Spark (Ideation)

The journey began with Barnir's clear vision, born from his extensive experience in the tech world: a pressing need to address the widespread fear and misunderstanding surrounding AI. He wanted to write a book that was decisive, informative, grounded in real-world experience (both technical and business-focused), and ultimately left readers feeling prepared and empowered, not panicked. Our initial conversations, driven by Barnir’s goals, involved brainstorming the book's core message, target audience, potential structure, length, tone, and even title ideas, exploring different angles like historical parallels and leveraging his unique background.

Step 2: Architecting the Argument (Outlining)

With the core concept solidified, the next crucial step was structuring the book's argument. Barnir provided the overarching narrative arc – moving from fear to understanding to action. Together, we iteratively developed and refined a detailed Table of Contents. This involved mapping out the logical progression through distinct parts: establishing the context and basic understanding, systematically deconstructing common fears, exploring AI's limits and reaffirming human agency, drawing lessons from historical adaptation, outlining practical strategies for individuals and businesses, delving into ethics, and finally, cultivating an "Unscarred" mindset. We iterated on chapter titles and the specific bullet points within each to ensure a comprehensive, logical, and compelling flow for the reader.

Step 3: Drafting the Narrative (Content Generation)

This phase represented the core of the human-AI writing partnership. Barnir acted as the architect and director, providing the core ideas, specific arguments, personal insights, unique anecdotes (like the memorable 'doughnut dream'), and essential background information (such as the details from his CV for the "About the Author" page). Based on Barnir's detailed prompts – outlining the goals, key points, and desired tone for each chapter or section – I, Gemini, served as a drafting assistant. My role was to help flesh out the text, structure complex arguments, generate illustrative examples (like historical parallels or glossary definitions), ensure clarity and flow, and rapidly produce initial versions of the chapters for Barnir's review and refinement. This iterative process ("Now rewrite the ending of Chapter 4 based on these points," "Revise this section to be more persuasive," "Add these details") allowed us to build the manuscript efficiently.

Step 4: Refining the Voice (Tone and Style)

Ensuring the book spoke with a consistent and effective voice – authoritative yet accessible, passionate but rational, decisive without being dismissive – was vital. Through cycles of feedback and revision, Barnir guided the refinement of the writing style. Specific requests to make the introduction more "convincing," to make a chapter more "juicy," or to ensure technical concepts were explained simply helped shape the final tone, ensuring it consistently reinforced the book's central "Unscared" message.

Step 5: Expanding the Scope (Adding Value)

As the core manuscript developed, we identified opportunities to add further value and address Barnir’s goals for broad appeal and enhanced credibility. Based on our discussions, I suggested potential additional chapters focusing on practical toolkits, deeper ethical considerations, business strategy, sector-specific impacts, the geopolitical landscape, and market dynamics. Barnir selected the most relevant additions, and we collaboratively incorporated these new sections, significantly broadening the book's scope, practical relevance, and strategic depth.

Step 6: Polishing the Details (Ancillary Content)

The final stages involved creating the supporting elements that enhance the reader's experience. This included generating the engaging chapter extras (quotes, anecdotes, homework assignments, fun ideas), compiling and expanding the Glossary of key terms, suggesting resources for Further Reading, outlining the typical structure for Notes/Bibliography, and crafting this very appendix to provide transparency about the creation process.

The Collaboration: Human Vision, AI Acceleration

The creation of Unscared: AI stands as a testament to a powerful model of human-AI collaboration. Barnir is unequivocally the author. His vision, born from years of deep industry experience, provided the book's soul, its core arguments, its unique insights, and its ultimate direction. He was the strategist, the domain expert, the storyteller, and the final arbiter of quality and message.

My role, as Gemini, was that of an AI collaborator and accelerator. I functioned as a tireless assistant – helping to brainstorm possibilities, structure complex information, generate draft text on demand, research supporting details (like historical parallels or definitions), refine language according to specific instructions, and organize the final manuscript. I could process requests and generate text far faster than humanly possible, enabling rapid iteration and exploration of different ideas.

This partnership allowed the book to move from a compelling concept to a comprehensive manuscript with remarkable efficiency, leveraging the irreplaceable strengths of human experience, vision, and judgment alongside the speed and versatility of AI. It demonstrates, in practice, one of the core themes of the book itself: the future likely isn't about being replaced by AI, but about discovering new and powerful ways to work with it – ethically, effectively, and without fear. We – Barnir, the author with the vision, and Gemini, the AI partner enabling its expression – hope this book empowers you on your own journey with AI.

Find my book here: https://unscaredai.com/

Strategy Through Action: The Power of Just Starting

Introducing the Momentum Method

Barnir

We've all been there: paralyzed by the desire for the perfect plan. Some thrive on detailed quarterly plans but know they will need to have regular pivots while others rigidly plan their day-to-day without fully knowing where this project will end up - and they bake in "if...then...else" logic in an attempt to keep customers and teams moving forward. Both approaches have their merits, and neither is inherently superior. What works for one person or project might be a complete disaster for another.

Many well-intentioned, experienced individuals will passionately advocate for their preferred method, often based on their own past successes and failures. They might insist that careful planning is the only path to success, while others might champion the agile approach of "building the plane while flying it." While their experiences are valuable, they're not universally applicable.

Especially for those newer to a field, the allure of a perfectly formulated strategy can be particularly strong. It offers a sense of control and security in the face of the unknown. However, sometimes, the most valuable lessons are learned through direct experience. No amount of theoretical preparation can truly replicate the insights gained from actually doing the work.

"Just start" isn't about reckless abandon. It's about recognizing that sometimes, the best way to develop a strategy is by engaging with the challenge itself. By taking action, even without a complete roadmap, you gain invaluable data. You discover what works, what doesn't, and what needs adjustment. This real-world feedback loop allows you to refine your approach iteratively, building a strategy organically as you progress.

This approach isn't about dismissing strategy altogether. It’s about acknowledging that strategy can emerge from action. It’s about prioritizing momentum and learning over theoretical perfection. It’s about understanding that sometimes, the best way to learn is by doing.

So, if you're feeling stuck in the planning phase, remember this: it's okay to start before you have all the answers. It's okay to adopt some tactics before the strategy is fully clear. Sometimes, the most effective strategy is simply to…just start. While it focuses on Israel's tech sector, the lessons within have far-reaching implications, offering valuable insights for entrepreneurs, political science majors, foreign policy executives, and other innovators. Furthermore, and most inspiring for us in America, is the thought of how these lessons can empower our youth & veterans, fostering resilience in challenging situations, cultivating versatility and to Israel's remarkable success.

They argue that compulsory military service, more than just combat training, instills leadership, quick decision-making, and teamwork under pressure. It crucially brings together individuals from all walks of life, fostering a sense of shared purpose and national identity that extends beyond the battlefield. This creates strong social bonds and a unique network of potential collaborators, laying the foundation for a close-knit and supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Further contributing to this unique environment is a cultural embrace of "chutzpah" — a boldness to challenge the status quo. In Israel, questioning authority, taking risks, and thinking unconventionally are not just accepted, they're expected. This encourages a relentless pursuit of improvement and a willingness to disrupt established norms.

Israel's success is further fueled by its diverse population. As a melting pot of cultures, the nation brings together people with a wide range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. This influx of talent creates a fertile ground for creativity and drives innovation in unexpected directions.

Underpinning these cultural factors is a national commitment to research and development. Israel prioritizes investment in R&D, laying the groundwork for technological breakthroughs and cutting-edge solutions. This commitment, combined with the necessity of doing more with less due to limited resources, has fostered a culture of efficiency and a drive to find innovative solutions.

Finally, strong family ties, due to the country's small size and the shared experiences of its people, create a close-knit support system for entrepreneurs. This sense of community provides a safety net, encourages collaboration, and fosters a strong sense of collective responsibility.

Forged in Service: Transferable Skills from Military to Civilian Life

"Start-up Nation" highlights the unexpected benefits of Israel's compulsory military service, emphasizing how it instills crucial skills applicable far beyond the battlefield. This experience fosters leadership, rapid decision-making under pressure, and collaborative teamwork, traits essential for success in any field. The intense environment forces individuals from diverse backgrounds to work together towards a common goal, forging a strong sense of national identity and a network of potential collaborators that extends into civilian life.

This concept resonates strongly with the experience of veterans in the United States. While the US military isn't compulsory, it similarly equips its service members with a unique set of transferable skills highly valued in the civilian workforce. These skills include:

Leadership and teamwork: Veterans often have experience leading teams, delegating tasks, and motivating others towards a shared objective.

Problem-solving and adaptability: The dynamic nature of military operations requires quick thinking, adaptability to changing circumstances, and the ability to find creative solutions to complex problems.

Technical skills: Many military roles provide specialized training in areas like technology, engineering, and healthcare, which can be directly applied to civilian careers.

Discipline and resilience: Military training instills a strong work ethic, the ability to perform under pressure, and the resilience to bounce back from setbacks.

These transferable skills make veterans valuable assets in various sectors, from business and technology to public service and healthcare. However, transitioning from military to civilian life can present challenges, and veterans often need support in translating their skills and experience into a civilian context.

By recognizing the parallels between the Israeli model and the experience of US veterans, we can better appreciate the value of military service in developing a skilled and resilient workforce. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of providing veterans with the resources and support they need to successfully integrate into civilian life and leverage their unique skills to contribute to society. This could include mentorship programs, skills translation workshops, and initiatives that connect veterans with potential employers who recognize the value of their experience.

Beyond the Boardroom: Unexpected Applications

The principles outlined in "Start-up Nation," emphasizing discipline, adaptability, innovation, and strategic thinking, have surprising applications beyond business. For martial artists, these principles translate to mental toughness, resilience, and a constant drive for improvement, mirroring the demands of entrepreneurship. Similarly, politicians can leverage these principles to navigate complex challenges, embrace calculated risks, and foster collaboration, ultimately driving progress and positive change.

The Ripple Effect: "Start-up Nation's" Global Impact

"Start-up Nation" didn't just tell Israel's story; it changed the global conversation around innovation. The book solidified Israel's reputation as a leading hub for entrepreneurship, attracting attention and investment from around the world. Inspired by the Israeli model, governments and organizations worldwide are studying and adapting elements of its unique ecosystem, seeking to replicate its success in their own contexts. This newfound recognition spurred a surge in venture capital and foreign investment, further fueling the growth of Israel's already dynamic tech sector.

A Call to Action: Embrace the "Start-up Nation" Spirit

"Start-up Nation" is more than just a true and relevant story; it's a call to action. It urges us to embrace the spirit of innovation, challenge conventional wisdom, and strive for excellence in all our endeavors. Let us all strive to cultivate the "Start-up Nation" mindset in our own lives, supporting initiatives that foster innovation and empower teams to reach their full potential.

“By embracing resilience, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of improvement, we unlock new possibilities and drive progress wherever we seek to make a difference.” (AB)

You can find the book here:https://amzn.to/3TVooor

The Future Isn’t to Be Feared, It’s to Be Shaped: Why I’m Skipping Bill Gates’ New Series

Embracing Innovation Over Fear-Driven Narratives

Barnir

Let me start by saying, I’m not at all anti-Bill Gates or anti-Netflix (my podcast is proof of that!). The way these issues are often presented can actually stifle innovation, scare off funding, and drive governments to take actions that may do more harm than good. We’re talking about narratives that make it seem like every new technology is a ticking time bomb and every attempt at solving big problems is doomed to fail. And that’s not just a bummer—it’s counterproductive.

Social Media Misinformation: More Than Just Bad Memes

Take social media misinformation, for example. Yes, it’s a serious problem. No one likes being bombarded with fake news or conspiracy theories. But when the conversation is all about the dangers of social media, we risk overlooking the incredible potential these platforms have to connect people, spread knowledge, and even drive social change. Instead of just focusing on the negatives, we should be asking how we can harness the power of social media for good. Otherwise, we might just end up with overzealous regulations that stifle the very innovation that makes these platforms valuable.

AI: The Scapegoat for Our Technophobia

And then there’s AI. It’s like every other day, someone’s predicting that AI will either steal our jobs, invade our privacy, or become our robot overlords. But while we’re busy worrying about AI turning against us, we might be missing out on the incredible ways it’s already improving lives—from predicting diseases before they become serious, to creating personalized education experiences, to helping us tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges. If we let fear dominate the narrative, we might just drive away the funding and support that AI innovation desperately needs. And let’s be real—who here believes the government will magically “fix” AI in ways that don’t create a whole new set of problems? Yeah, me neither.

Climate Crisis: Let’s Not Throw the Baby Out with the Bathwater

Climate change is another biggie. Yes, it’s a crisis, and yes, we need to take serious action. But constantly framing it as an impending apocalypse can actually be counterproductive. When people feel like the world is ending, they’re less likely to take action and more likely to give in to despair. We need to balance the narrative with stories of the incredible innovations happening in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate tech. By focusing only on the doom and gloom, we risk driving resources and talent away from the very solutions that could save us.

Income Inequality: A Complex Problem, But Are We Even Asking the Right Questions?

And then there’s income inequality. Yes, it’s a massive topic of discussion that deserves attention, but we’ve got to start by asking the right questions. Is “inequality” really the root of the problem, or is it just a symptom of something deeper? Is the “gap” between rich and poor an issue at all, or are we missing the bigger picture? We need to make sure we’re even defining what it is that we want to solve.

Maybe it’s not just about closing the gap but about improving the quality of life for everyone, regardless of where they fall on the economic spectrum. We have to consider whether the solutions we’re pushing will actually help people live better lives—or if they’re just feel-good measures that don’t address the underlying issues. By focusing solely on the negatives, we risk jumping to conclusions and implementing policies that might not actually solve the problem. Instead, we should be digging deeper, questioning our assumptions, and exploring innovative approaches that get to the heart of what’s really going on.

The Real Danger: Will Gates Offer, or Unintentionally Promote, Government Action?

But here’s the real kicker: Will Gates, with all his influence, offer or unintentionally promote a government response to these issues? It’s a valid concern. When narratives are shaped around fear and urgency, they can push governments to take action—action that’s often based more on panic than on a deep understanding of the problem. And let’s be honest, when has government intervention ever gone off without a hitch, especially in complex at which governments are missing any background and knowledge? We’re talking about policymakers who might not fully grasp the technology or the science, making decisions that could (already are) stifle innovation, drive away talent, and slow down progress. The last thing we need is well-meaning but misguided policies that end up doing more harm than good.

Why We Need to Keep Accelerating Progress

Now, more than ever, we need to keep the momentum going. Innovation doesn’t happen in a vacuum—it thrives on optimism, on the belief that we can make things better. Every time we paint a picture of a world on the brink of disaster, we risk discouraging the very people who are working on solutions. We need to celebrate the progress we’ve made, highlight the innovations that are changing lives, and keep pushing forward.

The future isn’t something to be feared—it’s something to be shaped, one innovation at a time.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Lucky to Be Part of a Community That Promotes Progress

I’m genuinely thankful to be part of a community focused on progress. The reasons, often rooted in insecurity and misplaced priorities, are varied:

Threat to Authority: Some managers fear that a highly competent team member might outshine them or challenge their authority, regardless of how rooted it is in our constitution. This insecurity can lead to choosing "safe" candidates who pose no perceived threat to the status quo.

Fear of Short-Term Commitment: There's a misconception that the best talents are always on the move, using each job as a stepping stone. Managers worry about investing in someone who might leave quickly.

Budget Concerns: Top talent often comes with a higher (political!) price tag. Managers might opt for less qualified candidates to stay within budget constraints, overlooking the long-term value a stellar employee could bring.

Team Dynamics: There's a fear that introducing a high achiever might disrupt team harmony or demotivate other team members.

Overqualification Myth: Some managers believe that overqualified candidates will quickly become bored and disengaged, leading to poor performance or early departure.

The Political Parallel

Yes, my timing may not be random. This phenomenon bears a striking resemblance to how some presidential candidates choose their running mates. Just as a presidential hopeful might opt for a VP who complements rather than overshadows them, managers sometimes select team members who fill gaps without threatening the established order. Are they always choosing them to fill the right gap? not too often!

History has shown that the most effective leadership teams, in both politics and business, are those that unite diverse strengths and embrace collective excellence without fear.

The Cost of Settling

The repercussions of this hiring hesitancy can be severe:

Missed Opportunities: By not hiring the best, we all miss out on innovative ideas and exceptional performance that could drive the organization forward.

Mediocrity Becomes the Norm: When hiring practices consistently favor the "good enough" over the excellent, it can lead to a culture of mediocrity.

Competitive Disadvantage: In a global market where talent is a key differentiator, failing to attract and retain the best can leave a company trailing behind more courageous competitors.

Losing the elections

Shifting the Mindset

To overcome this paradox, organizations need to:

Embrace Collective Success: Recognize that a team's success reflects positively on its leadership. The achievements of high-performing team members should be a source of pride, not threat.

Focus on Long-Term Value: Look beyond immediate costs and consider the long-term value that top talent can bring to the organization.

Create an Environment for Excellence: Build a culture that not only attracts but retains top talent by offering growth opportunities and recognizing contributions.

Redefine Leadership: True leadership isn't about being the smartest in the room, but about orchestrating and empowering a team of exceptional individuals.

Address Insecurities: Provide training and support for managers to help them overcome personal insecurities that might influence their hiring decisions.

Beware of those who will applaud your wrong choices

In any organization, the presence of yes-men, or yes-press—individuals or media organization who consistently agree with everything their leaders or party say—can be a significant detriment to success. These individuals may seem supportive, but their uncritical agreement often masks underlying issues and prevents constructive feedback. Recognizing and avoiding yes-men is crucial for fostering a healthy, innovative, and dynamic work environment.

<a class="image-link image2" This might not be the same as before for several reasons:

1. People Grow, People Change:

• Both of you have evolved over the years. Your skills, perspectives, and expectations have likely changed. What worked well in the past might not fit the current dynamic.

2. Old Grudges Might Linger:

• Even if you parted on good terms, old frustrations or misunderstandings could resurface. For example, unresolved disagreements on project directions or management styles might still affect your professional relationship.

3. Replicating Old Work Relationships:

• Trying to copy-paste an old working relationship into a new environment is rarely successful. The “ratio” of power and influence from your previous setup might block new opportunities for both you and your boss, potentially harming the new company’s dynamics.

4. Cultural and Organizational Differences:

• The new company may have a different culture and structure. What worked in your previous organization might not align with the new company’s values and workflow, leading to friction.

5. Evolving Professional Goals:

• Your career aspirations might have changed since you last worked together. What you once found fulfilling might no longer be your priority, and this misalignment can cause dissatisfaction.

So what Can You Do?

Why pass on a good opportunity just because you’ll be working with the same person? Here are some strategies to consider:

1. Seek a Parallel Role:

• Aim for a position that is on the same level as your former boss. This way, you can leverage your existing relationship without the hierarchical tension. This approach allows both of you to collaborate as equals, fostering a more balanced and innovative working environment.

2. Introduce a New Reporting Structure (a Mediator):

• Suggest having someone else you will report to directly, who in turn reports to your former boss. This buffer can help manage expectations and reduce potential friction. It ensures that your direct interactions are with a new supervisor, which can help refresh the working relationship and provide a new dynamic.

3. Open Communication:

• Have an open and honest conversation with your former boss about how both of you have grown and changed. Establish new boundaries and expectations to ensure a healthy working relationship. Transparency is key; addressing any lingering concerns upfront can prevent misunderstandings and build a stronger, more effective partnership.

4. Evaluate the New Environment:

• Assess the new company’s culture and values thoroughly. Ensure that it’s a good fit for you and that the environment supports healthy professional relationships. Take the time to understand the new team dynamics and how your role can align with the company’s mission and values, ensuring a seamless integration.

So, will you do it?

By considering these factors and strategies, you can make an informed decision about working with your former boss again, ensuring that it benefits your career and contributes positively to the new organization.

The Ultimate Question to Ask Founders Before You Accept the Job Offer

(If you don't find it a bit creepy)

Barnir

Customer Success is about people, it’s about “them”. I call on customer success professionals and leaders in our field to take the right route before things get out of hand.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

The following described scenario is my go-to question when discussing customer success with founders and leaders, whether as part of an interview or any other introductions. As you get closer, you notice another car approaching, slowing down, potentially stopping, and signaling towards your car’s location, indicating they are waiting for your spot. How do you react?

Insight:

The response in this situation reveals a lot about the level of awareness, consideration for others, and ability to prioritize. It’s a small moment that can demonstrate how we navigate shared spaces and handle everyday interactions with others.

Conclusion:

If you resonate with the response and understand its implications, you are well-equipped with the necessary awareness and consideration to work with that person. Good luck, they are a keeper.

Subscribe now

Stop this “Hiring from the Future” Nonsense

Few ideas are truly original.

Barnir

Few ideas are truly original. Even new ideas quickly become old news and common knowledge. Dig deeper to find people who are the right fit at the right time. Can a candidate from a billion-dollar firm operate on a shoestring budget at your startup? Only a few can adapt and thrive. (Can you tell this was written before Generative AI became our master?). And ChatGTP.

Finally, evaluate the resources you can accerss.
